Teaching your grandchildren to cook can be a great way to bond in the kitchen. Cooking basics are essential tools your children will need throughout life and therefore there is never a good time like the present to begin teaching them.
By getting them involved in helping out with meals your grandchildren will begin to pick up on skills that will help them as they get older. Of course, everything you teach has to be age appropriate and safety should always come first.
Safety First
It is important that no matter what age your grandchild is that you teach them the importance of safety in the kitchen. This means not messing with knives without proper permission, how to properly hold and cut with a knife (if they are old enough), washing their hands before they start cooking, steering clear of the flame on the stove, and also keeping pot handles pointing inwards so as not to cause a hazard. Now that the reusable shopping bag law has been instituted in so many states, we all have lots of sturdy bags with handles stuffed in various places. The backseat of the car, the trunk, the kitchen cabinet, the mudroom, etc.
What to do with all of these bags? It’s time to go beyond grocery shopping and think outside the box, or bag.
Ideas for what to do with all of those reusable grocery bags:
1 – Stash some in the trunk of the car to bag & transport items as needed.
2 – Store off-season shoes in them.
3 – Use one as an emergency summertime fun bag. Stock it with sunscreen in a resealable bag, a couple of extra beach towels, flip-flops and sun hats.
4 – Use them to carry and transport party food next time you are invited to an event.
